You probably have a group of people with whom you work that you call “your team”.  Compare this team with a team you enjoyed playing with as a kid.  Is it the same or different?  Most people I know would say something like “When I was a kid it was fun.  Now it is just work.”  Why?

Try this approach with your team.

  • Clearly establish the objective of “the game of work”.  What does the experience of winning look like?
  • Discuss the rules. How do we score, what is fair, what constitutes a penalty etc.?
  • Help people determine what position they want to play.  Most people want to do the thing at which they can excel.
  • Provide coaching so that each player can play their best game. Talent is like a diamond in the rough, it needs cutting and polishing to become a gem.
